Grind to the Glow Up!
NYC based independent singer/songwriter Bernadette Barnes is one of the premier vocalists of our time. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Bernadette got her start singing in the choir at her grandfather’s church, where she discovered her love for music and God. Her smooth, jazzy, electrifying vocals transcends genres and are sure to leave you breathless.
We sat down with Bernadette to learn a bit more about her journey thus far and the legacy she hopes to leave behind.
1. How did you become a singer/artist in NYC? I fell in love with singing at a young age and always had the desire to follow my passion. At the age of eighteen, I decided to take my career to the next level and moved to New York City. I always knew I wanted to live in NYC, and immerse myself in the culture and lifestyle the city has to offer. I got accepted into New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts, where I took acting classes and continued strengthening my voice. Taking acting classes really helped me express myself better on and off the stage. Moving to New York has helped me blossom as an artist and singer.
2. What drives you as an independent artist? My drive and ambition stems from my upbringing. Growing up my dad always advised me to own something. When I decided to truly pursue singing, I knew I needed to take steps to ensure I owned my copyrights and publishing. I want to follow the footsteps of artists like Master P and Chance the Rapper. My voice is my instrument and as an independent, I want the world to know my voice and my brand. Ownership is important. I have a family and I want to leave a legacy for my daughters to pass on to their own families one day.
3. You and your husband are both creatives, how have you been able to both push forward with both your dreams? Honestly, by the grace of God we make it work. We balance our gigs and share calendars. My husband understands what I’m going through and is always very supportive and building me up, he’s my biggest fan. Our goal is to motivate our kids to strive for even better than what mommy and daddy have. We take them to most of my gigs to show them it's never too late to follow your dreams, no matter how old you are, you can do it.
4. What’s your advice to artist considering going full time into their passion? I would recommend reaching out to people, attending seminars, open mics and networking events. Carry around business cards and head shots. Always be prepared to make a good impression and never lose your integrity. Don't take no for an answer and be prepared to work for free in the beginning. Study and learn the business and always do your research. Continue working on your gift and never stop grinding.
